Biology labs are pointless when you have time (60 minutes actually) to sit around and do nothing on your laptop. Seriously, that's where I am right now. I can't decide whether or not to visit home on Easter break. I think I will for sure if Ali doesn't come visit me, because it is her birthday today and I bought my little sis a present. It rocks so hard I want to keep it for myself. But if I do go home, I will make a promise to myself to actually follow through on going out and being social. I should go to some of the bars in Comox, as they are easier to get home from. The other night I walked home to UVic from downtown with Chris. It took an hour and a half. I will never walk that far home from a bar ever again.

Okay, I realize that last post was kind of emo, but whatever. I can't be happy twentyfourseventhreesixtyfour. It's just not possible, believe me, I've tried. But enough with it all, I am happy again - you know why? Because tonight I'm baking sugar cookies for all my friends in Victoria, and decorating them in the most awesome way possible. You can't be sad while you're making conversation heart cookies with awesome catch phases of your own invention.

Plus I have a week at home to look forward to. I miss the valley sometimes, it's nice to go home. Plus I get to go snowboarding. Plus I'll probably hit up buck-a-beer. Plus I'll probably use my mom's money to go shopping because the zipper on my second pair of jeans broke (I only have 2 pairs, how tragic!!!) and now my fly is constantly unzipped or in the process of unzipping... Eek!!

my life is lame

Things to do:
1. Make shopping list for baking extravaganza this weekend
2. Do said shopping
3. Bake up a storm
4. Study up a storm

I'm tired of being single, and kind of... no, strike that... very lonely. But there's no way that's going to change anytime soon. My tarot card reading (that you Alison, you predicted an entirely bleak future for me) said so. And how do you meet guys in a strange town? Victoria is still a strange town to me, it's not Comox. Not that I would ever date someone from the valley, it would bring up so many conflicts and valley things..and gossip for everyone. And not that I'm planning on becoming a bar star... ugh. I always thought I was outgoing and friendly and flirty, and yet here I am. Ranting to myself on my blog. That is a sad statement about my life at the moment. I think maybe I have too high expectations, I'm looking for someone I'm not going to find. My perfect guy is maybe too perfect.

Next week is chaos. I have 4 exams (well, 3 midterms, 1 test) and I'm only slightly prepared for one of them. Biology and Environmental Studies I haven't even begun to study for, and biology especially is going to be killer. All killer and no filler.

Thunderdome

It's thunderdome again, already. Where does the time go? Les examens are a pain. Has anyone noticed I write as if I'm actually talking to someone (has anyone noticed I just said "has anyone noticed" like anyone is reading this to respond!?!) But Eric reads this, so maybe I'm talking to him (omg shoutout?)

Things I've been thinking about: I want to go snowboarding so bad, salmon is delicious, pretty much all seafood is good, I feel like baking, Gilmore girls is a guilty pleasure, boys are hard to come by, Environmental studies is turning my closet hippy status into a...well..status as a hippy, you can only rant so much about salmon farming on the B.C. coast, I love raisins - they are the snack food of all snack food, rotary is fun, I want to go to Peru, sometimes I miss home, for real.

Music is delicious. If it were edible, I'd eat coldplay and radiohead when I wanted to chill and get work done, and I'd eat Xavier Rudd whenever I wanted to go travelling, and while I WAS travelling, and sometimes I'd snack on some Marilyn Manson while I was walking to class, and everyone would think I was so bad ass. Or something. These are the thoughts I have.

The library (my second home nowadays) is a-closing, so I gotta leave. They flashed the lights. And made an announcement. I love the library, it is sometimes a haven. Time go to home and catch up on TV.

everybody rock your body

I'm so glad no one actually reads this. It would be heartbreaking if they did. In all seriousness. Why don't I just get some sort of journal that isn't publicly available? Not a clue. I'm silly like that. I think it might be because I never liked diaries. And I always wrote like someone was going to read them anyways. I never truly divulged the secrets of my life, they were more like a record of some daily goings-on. Sometimes I just need to write. Something, anything. Not a story, not a secret... just a thought. I have the weirdest thoughts sometimes. Like, what if you marry someone with the same last name as you... Do you still take their last name as your own, formally? Or does everyone just assume you did. People will always think you just kept your Maiden Name, instead of taking your husbands.... but did you? or didn't you!?!?
These are my thoughts.
Also, since when did we get old enough to celebrate the nineties as in "90210 Nineties Night at Lucky Bar". They just weren't that long ago.. But admittedly it's pretty much the funnest thing ever. Flashback to an even younger youth. Flashback to the Backstreet Boys and Aqua and Sir Mixalot. Freaking amazing fun.

Everbody
Rock your body
everybody
rock your body right
backstreets back, alright
heey now

as if

I came back to the Valley for reading break, and it's kind of sad because I don't really have many friends left here. The Comox Valley is not a fun place to be without your friends. There is a profound lack of stuff to do other than hang out. At a bar, at a house, at the lake, at the beach, in the park, at a show. I'm not open and friendly enough to go to a bar or club alone. I always thought I was outgoing enough to do so, but I don't think I am.

I'm going to NIC tomorrow morning to work in the library. I think it will make me miss the UVic library a lot. I love being up on the third floor surrounded by old important looking books, and going up onto the floor commonly known as 3 1/2, except I just made that up so not really. But it SHOULD be floor 3 1/2, or 3 1/4. I think next time I'm in the library I'll just spend 3 hours sitting in the occult section, pretending I'm an expert on Vampyrs and witchs and demon lore. Like the rogue demon slaying nerd that I am.

I've also decided I'm not good at being alone. I'm emotionally needy like some sort of really emotional person that needs close physical and emotional contact to stay sane. I'm afraid if I go on much longer without somebody, I might become a giant slut. Hahah, no, not really. But I may just become rash and lose some of my inhibition that is so important these days.

In other news: I'm so bored at home right now, luckily I have Jasper because he's warm and cuddly. Jasper is my puppy. He is a schnoodle, and he is my mom's third child that she's always wanted minus the lack of housetraining. She pretty much takes better care of him than her other two children.

Lindsay Lohan

Very recently I was having a discussion about Lindsay Lohan with my friendy friend Steve-o...who loves Lindsay Lohan. He is an otherwise all around righteous dude (thaaankk you Aaron Echolls! ...vote for Duncan Kane everyone!) . I have this whole love/hate thing with the girl. I love the Parent Trap...and Mean Girls...and even Just My Luck... but god, do I hate that blond anorexic diva bitch that cutie pie has become. And I strictly say NO to music videos or any other step outside of acting (dude, stick with what you know....ugh)

The whole point of this is just so I can include this quote in here in some sort of context...cause it's pretty much awesome...:

"the world is a crazy place meghan, but what kind of a world would it be if a cute little redhead didn't turn evil, and make us question our own beliefs, values, and libido's?"

On to other more pressing issues and important fan girl whatsits and squealing.... Ben knows Glory? more like TROY KNOWS JIMMY! That's motherfuckingright kids... Troy Vandergraff (twin brother of the oh so cute Bobby Drake) will be playing Jimmy Olsen on Smallville...and whatdaya know...I think Chloe finally gets lucky! yay and hooray!!!

I'll finish this later.

I should be a lesbian, then I wouldn't have to deal with boys. End of thought.

the single life

So this guy at work asked me out the other day, and we went to a movie tonight...we were SUPPOSED to see Pirates, but that failed so we decided to catch Superman Returns at the Palace. Not much to say about the movie, it was no worse or better than I expected...but it couldn't live up to Smallville. Even GOOD Lex in Smallville is ten times the manipulative bastard than Kevin Spacey. Movie Luthor just seemed more like a petty criminal than a brilliant and deviant villian. Anyways.... the whole point is, I felt weird because I knew the guy wanted it to be a "date" but I just wanted to hang out with a cool guy from work who makes life serving coffee a little bit easier to handle. It was mainly cool, but also a little awkward. Also, I obviously am not ready to date again...i just figured it would be nice to get out of the house. Not that I'm moping, because frankly... I'm more angry than sad about certain situations of the past couple weeks.

All in all, I'm thinking he was a little disappointed that I didn't really flirt or anything tonight...so we'll see how work is on Friday. It'll probably be okay, it's too busy and crowded back there for awkwardness. Though he probably won't go out of his way to do one of my jobs for me again. Dang.

Today I'm going to the hospital to get a skin biopsy to see if I have Dermatitis Herpetiformis...which is a skin condition caused by wheat intolerance that sometimes accompanies Celiac disease. So basically if I test positive, I can never eat wheat or gluten again without causing serious harm. ie. my small intestine shuts down. Pretty much. So I'm totally not stoked, but whatever. On the plus side it's all nice and sunny out, which is nice. I can't wait for the BBQ tonight, I haven't been out in a while hahah....no life, no life whatsoever.

On another note, I'm pretty excited to register for my courses next year. Except for the whole math thing. I have to take math 12 next year, and I'm getting tutoring over the summer to prepare for it. Basically I'm doing Math 12 through NIDES, but not actually taking the exam unless I actually feel prepared, which I won't. So it will be a test run, and then hopefully I'll be able to retain all that for the actual course and not fail.
ugh
ugh
ugh

shower time.

So, I'm working at Tim Hortons this summer, and I figured I'd say a little something about the fast food industry on here, since I haven't posted in a long long time, and figured it was about time I restarted my internet addiction, or whatever you want to call it. That's right! With work and everything I don't even have time to spend hours upon hours on msn, wikipedia, and countless webcomics (ugh...) Heck, I barely watch TV either (*sob* goodbye Buffy...goodbye Spike, Drusilla, Xander, Anya, Willow, Giles, Oz, Tara...)... Helllooooo, Angel! Anyways, after eight hours of "Is this for here or to go" and "would you like that sandwich on white or whole wheat, and would you like it toasted" I hate people in general. Well, some people... not that cute mom who got her 10 month old to hand me the cash, because that was just adorable. And none of the cute shirtless boys, no matter how rude they are. But the people who talk on their cell phones in the drive thru, or order a zillion more things once they get up to the window...and anyone who asks for more than 1 ice capp. during the busy hours, and gets all huffy if the machines aren't working. AND SPECIAL HATRED to that old guy with the pot belly who expects you to know his order and is kinda mean and angry and then watchs you at the sandwich bar to make sure you're making his blueberry bagel double toasted with butter on one side and plain cream cheese on the other juuuuust right. fuck you, man...just....fuck you.

On the plus side I get to wear a headset and that's just plain fun.

I"m bored, so I've decided to post before and after photos of when I got my hair chopped. I REALLY need a digital camera, I barely have any pictures of this year...

- The Edible Woman
- Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)
- Much Ado About Nothing

2. Create some sort of study package of notes for English

3. Study English like I've never studied before (I have to succeed in at least ONE class!)

4. Watch Buffy

P.S. This is what a muffinbunny looks like. It is cute, fluffy, and the size of a muffin.

MUFFINBUNNY!!!!

If you're from UVic, you know what this means... If you're not, well, then you're not cool enough to know!

Thursday, April 06, 2006

I was thinking tonight about how much friendships can change in only a year, the perfect example being the transition from highschool to university, and to the end of your first year. That's not the end of the thought process; however, I don't feel like delving into it just yet.

Why even bother to make a post? Because I can.

hooray for tv

I've been avoiding an essay like the plague and I just realized there's only a week left of school before the exam period starts. (Un)Fortunately, two of them occur next week. I haven't decided whether this is a good or a bad thing. Means I won't have the weekend entirely free I suppose.
Chris and Alison have got me back into Buffy the Vampire Slayer in a serious way. I can't wait for tomorrow night, for there's another Buffy marathon planned. One thing I did learn from university, it is SOOOO much better to watch a series in it's entirety from the beginning. Don't jump in halfway, don't settle for one episode a week - download the muthafucka and watch it from start to finish (in as few days as possible). That is the BEST way to go about television. I found it is possible to watch over seven episodes in one sitting (and that was only at the start of this developing trend) without getting bored, because TV, unlike film, is supposed to grab your attention and keep it for an hour. Thus, there is no such thing as a television show just dragging on and on. Shows fly past with individual plots, and the underlying arching story lines are easier to keep up with (there's no forgetting what Willow did last week, or why Xander is upset).
Other shows I am now addicted to include:
-The Office (American version with Steve Carell but I'm dying to see the British version)
-Supernatural (but I never watch it alone, and always in broad daylight!)
-Smallville (The acting may be poor but Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) is ohhh soo sexy!!!!)
-Buffy the Vampire Slayer (we're in the middle of season two now)
and last, but DEFINITELY not least
- House, M.D. (Those piercing blue eyes... "oh House, your very name, will never leave this girl the same")

Emdie!

Ben Crites and I created a genre a while back... the same night we figured out that he is almost exactly three dryers long (the laundry room is where genius truly occurs) So I drew a dude to illustrate our idea. He's so full of 'tude. He's depressed and pretentious at the same time. So his self-esteem is extremely high and low at the same time... what a conundrum!

I hate school

I challenge anyone to bullshit an article for a journalism class better than this one. I didn't do any interviews, though all these cool people do exist in real life. The quotes are bullshit, and "Blythe Lang" is my cover, because you are definitely not supposed to write about yourself or use your own quotes. I had about a month to write this, and I started the night before it was due at like 1 am. It's a feature article...and the lead is a bit weird, but I didn't know how to start it off, so I used a "list lead" as described in my coursepack, because it seemed to work in this situation. Other than that, the article is kosher - the prices and devices are real...

The New Roadmap to a Relationship

A straight up evaluation of software, hardware, and everything in between that can be used to make a relationship work – whatever the odds.

Michael Kerr, 18, and Blythe Lang, 18, have been together almost seven months now.
Jackie Larkin, 19, has been in a relationship with Nathan Schmidt, 19, for a year.
Lucy Bridges, 18, very recently began dating Nick Schoenfelder, 19.
Mark Jenkins, 18, and Krista Pierce, 17, have been a couple for over a year.
These relationships have one thing in common: they are all long distance.
Many people balk at the thought of a long distance relationship, and it is true they can be much more difficult to maintain, and come with some major disadvantages – but with the right technology, and the right outlook, it’s possible to make the relationship work. So when my friend Lucy came to me for advice about handling a new long distance relationship (she lives in Edmonton, he lives in Naniamo), I went to the experts in the subject – other couples.
“You definitely have to be sure you want this,” said Kerr, a first year student at North Island College in Courtenay, B.C. “I was really hesitant at first, but I’m really happy I went for it, I’m so in love with this girl.”
“I think this kind of relationship is so difficult mainly because of how much you have to trust the other person, undoubtedly more than in a normal relationship. And sometimes there’s a lot of frustration which leads to some really petty arguments,” said Larkin. She moved from Victoria to Calgary to live closer to her boyfriend, who is currently in his second year at the University of Lethbridge.
One thing they all agree on, whether separated by a four hour drive or the Atlantic Ocean, a long distance relationship is tough, but technology is making it easier.
So what is out there? From web cams to text-messaging – these days communication isn’t limited to the postal service.
“We talk on msn, send emails, and call each other almost every night” said Larkin, “sometimes it’s really tough – but you deal with it.”
Long distance phone calls can be very expensive. Cell phones are packed full of outrageous fees that can pile up faster than you can talk. Still, couples tend to use them.
“The phone still beats everything else… I talk to Krista on my cell every night” said Jenkins, a student in residence at the University of Victoria. His girlfriend lives in White Rock.
“If you know you’re going to be doing something long distance, you should think about getting a landline phone instead of a cell phone. Cell phones are more convenient, but they are definitely not meant for long phone calls. Prepaid phone cards are the way to go,” was Larkin’s advice.
She’s right. Prepaid long distance cards come in almost any denomination and there are many varieties suited to how often and how long you talk on the phone. And while you won’t be able to talk on the go, you’ll have a clearer picture of how much you are spending.
Cell phone companies charge upwards of 25 cents a minute for long distance calls, and that’s not even taking into consideration the cost of running over your minutes. Text-messaging on a cell phone is even more expensive and can cost around 50 cents per message.
“My mom freaked out at me because my bill was over $300... it was a complete shock, I just didn’t realize how much I was being charged for every minute I spent on the phone” said Lang. “We’ve changed my plan now, and I’m really careful about how much time I spend talking.”
A great alternative to this is the internet. With the purchase of a microphone (prices range from $20 - $60+, and most new laptops have built in microphones) you can talk for free online, using programs such as MSN Messenger or Skype.
“Skype has it’s drawbacks for sure, the reception isn’t quite like the phone, sometimes my voice sounds kind of canned,” Kerr noted “but other than that it’s okay. It’s free, that’s the best part”
“Mike doesn’t like Skype as much, but if it stops my mom from screaming about my phone bill, then it’s worth it” said Lang.
The biggest problem with Skype is the echoing – many people are uncomfortable hearing themselves through their speakers a half second after they speak – but this can be easily solved with a pair of headphones. If you are using it on a laptop, the only other drawback is how close the microphone is to the keyboard. Generally, it’s best not to engage in other activities on the computer when you’re talking – because your voice will be drowned out by the clatter of the keys as you type.
Of course there is always instant messenger which can be a great way to talk casually with your sweetheart. The only problem is how addicting it is.
“Now that Nick and I are dating, we’ve been talking on msn for like seven hours a night! It’s crazy, I’m not getting enough sleep…but I can’t help it, I miss him so much already,” said Bridges.
Kerr’s advice: don’t drag out conversations. “At first it’s really hard not to talk to them all night, but it gets easier to say goodbye after a while. Just remember you’ve got a life outside of your relationship”
“It’s best if you don’t spend all night moping around – last semester I was skipping parties just to talk to Mike on msn… then I realized that the best way to deal with the stress was to get out of my room, go see my friends, and have some fun,” said Lang. “Just taking my mind off of him made things so much better, we talk a lot less now, but we’re still just as close.”
Msn also has options for using web cameras and microphones. Web cameras are relatively inexpensive, but the images aren’t always great on the cheaper versions.
So before you dive into a long distance relationship, check your budget and consider picking up some gadgets that could make the distance almost disappear.
